Smartphones causing decline in computer sales

The invention of the smartphone is even causing the sales of computers to decline. According to Gizmodo.com, in 2011 manufacturers shipped 487.7 million smartphones and only 414.6 million desktop, laptop, and tablet computers. People are now more inclined to buy a smartphone due to the fact that many things we need to accomplish can get done with a $100 device that fits in our pockets and hands. “The greater availability of smart phones at lower price points has helped tremendously, but there has been a driving trend of increasing consumer appetite for Internet browsing, content consumption and engaging with apps and services on mobile devices”(Gizmodo). As smart phone appeal increases, it appears that the population is spending more time navigating apps rather than actual websites on the computer. This trend will continue to be on the rise as more of the population continues to make the switch from a mobile phone to a smart phone.
